GDC has received a major boost after landing a EUR 5 million (KES 718,469,550) grant from the just-launched Green Resilient Electricity System Programme for Kenya. The GDC vote is part of the EUR 20 million designated for Kenya.
GDC will use the funds for capacity building in “Sustainable Project Management” in a bid to ensure timely and successful implementation of the Baringo-Silali geothermal project.
The programme was launched by the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Energy and Petroleum Hon. Davis Chirchir, at a side-event of the just concluded 9th IEA Global Conference on Energy Efficiency that took place in Nairobi. The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and the International Energy Agency (IEA) co-hosted the two-day conference that took place on May 21-22, 2024.
The Green Resilient Electricity System Programme is supported by Global Gateway which is Europe’s investment strategy for the world.
In his statement, the CS noted that: “By making the Kenyan energy system more resilient, efficient and clean, the programme definitely contributes to Kenya’s energy and climate goals, powering socio-economic growth and transformation, as well as, supporting green industrialisation, employment and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions”.
At the conference, the GDC delegation was led by the Managing Director & CEO Mr. Paul Ngugi. He was accompanied by Acting General Manager, Strategy, Research & Innovation Eng. Martha Mburu, and Project Management Engineer, Moses Kachumo.
The Conference brought together leaders in government, business and civil society, from across the globe who are seeking to accelerate policy action on energy efficiency. Being held for the first time in Africa, the Conference sought to consolidate progress and drive momentum towards the global goal of doubling energy efficiency progress between now and 2030 – a key outcome of COP28.
Best of luck GDC Team!
