UNEP/ARGeo Energy Unit Head Dr. Meseret Zemedkun, pays courtesy call on GDC Top Leadership

Geothermal Development Company (GDC) Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Jared O. Othieno on Wednesday 14th October 2020 hosted the United Nations Environment Programme/ African Rift Geothermal Conference (UNEP/ARGeo) Head of Energy Unit Dr. Meseret Teklemariam Zemedkun at the GDC Kawi offices in Nairobi.

During the courtesy call, Dr. Zemedkun briefed Eng. Othieno on the partnership between the two organizations and outlined how countries within the East African region have benefitted from the goodwill of the Kenyan Government and GDC expertise and facilities. She pointed out that GDC and UNEP/ARGeo have been working closely to build capacity in geothermal resource development within the region.

GDC MD/CEO thanked her for the support and reiterated that GDC will continue to work closely with the UN agency. “The upcoming ARGeo-C8 conference is a strategic forum for GDC to interact with stakeholders in the geothermal industry, said Eng. Othieno.

Additionally, MD & CEO said that GDC’s strategic initiative is to see how Geothermal Direct Use can be used to diversify revenue and called upon UNEP/ARGeo to partner with GDC promote further the direct utilization of geothermal within the region.

Present during the meeting were GDC’s Board Director Mr. Crispin Lupe, Dr. Robert Ogutu, Ag. Principal Officer Geothermal Centre of Excellence (GCE), Pauline Sheghu, Chief Office Corporate Communication and Marketing (CCM), Moses Mbego and Ryan Ndombi both from UNEP Energy Unit.

On his part, Mr. Crispin Lupe confirmed support for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence saying that Kenya was identified as the host of the Centre of Excellence in Geothermal.

Acting Deputy Manager Geothermal Centre of Excellence (GCE) Dr. Robert Ogutu outlined the benefits GDC has accrued from the partnership and emphasized the need for the two entities to continue collaborating. He also informed the delegation that twenty-one (21) GDC staff will present papers at the upcoming ARGeo-C8. The virtual conference will be held on 4 -6th November, 2020.
