The government will continue to support GDC to develop geothermal energy in the country’s quest to attain 100% green energy, H.E the President Dr. William Samoei Ruto C.G.H. has promised. He also challenged GDC to take “leadership in driving Kenya’s energy transition.”
The President made the remarks yesterday during the groundbreaking for the construction of the third power plant which will be done by OrPower Twenty-Twenty.
“I urge the Geothermal Development Corporation (GDC) to develop and sustain a high capacity to offer effective leadership in driving Kenya’s energy transition,” the President said.
He continued: “Although geothermal projects are complex, the GDC must remain capable of facilitating swift progress with respect to Menengai and other projects by utilising local labour as well as technical skills and expertise to promote self-reliance and national pride”
“This is a great moment in the history of our nation, the groundbreaking of this 35MW power plant signifies our quest to transit to clean affordable energy for the economic growth of our country,” the President said.
He said the government remains steadfast in giving any necessary support needed by GDC and private partners to unlock the vast geothermal potential in the country.
“I would like to call on GDC to remain steadfast in development of the geothermal resources and maintain the innovativeness to remain competitive in the sector. While doing this the government will provide any required support that is needed,” the President assured
Further, the President lauded the efficiency of public-private partnerships in unlocking key development projects in the country.
He also lauded the partnership between GDC and Nakuru County government on the plans to set up an industrial park within Menengai that he said will be a game changer in agri-business and manufacturing within the region saying every megawatt moves the country closer to economic prosperity.
Earlier, the President made a stop at the GDC Steam Field Control Room where he signed a visitors book. Later, he was taken through a display on how GDC is unlocking geothermal in the country. The President planted a commemorative tree and toured the Control Room.
