GDC has planted more than 50,000 trees at the Menengai Geothermal Project since the onset of the long rains in March 2026, reinforcing its commitment to environmental restoration and sustainable geothermal development.
Last week, a team led by Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Manager Mr. Gabriel Wetangula planted an additional 3,000 trees within the project area as part of preparations for World Environment Day on June 5.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Wetangula emphasized the importance of integrating environmental stewardship into geothermal development to ensure long-term sustainability.
“Geothermal power gives us clean energy beneath the surface, but it is the green cover above the ground that completes the climate solution,” he said. “Our tree planting efforts in Menengai align with the national target of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, because a greener environment is the foundation of a greener energy future.”

Senior SHE Technician Mr. James Karuri attributed the milestone to the favourable weather conditions experienced during the long rains, which have supported the successful establishment of seedlings across the project area.
“The tree planting exercise has been ongoing since March. The favourable rains have provided ideal conditions for the programme, enabling us to surpass the milestone,” he said.
The exercise brought together employees from various departments in a collective effort to restore degraded areas, enhance biodiversity, and support GDC’s broader environmental sustainability agenda.
Through such initiatives, GDC continues to advance responsible geothermal development while contributing to national efforts to increase forest cover and strengthen climate resilience.
