The Baringo-Silali Project is a Government of Kenya and KfW sponsored geothermal development project covering three prospect areas namely Paka, Korosi and Silali.
The Government of Kenya (GoK) is funding the construction of access roads and well pads while KfW, through a Euros 80 Million loan, is funding the water supply system, drilling of 15-20 geothermal wells, as well as undertaking project related consultancies.
The surface studies of this project started in 2010. The main geothermal manifestations in the area include fumaroles and altered landscapes. The Baringo-Silali Geothermal Project has an estimated geothermal potential of 3,000MW. GDC plans to develop 300MW in the first phase of the project as follows:
• Paka – 100MW
• Korosi- 100MW
• Silali- 100MW
GDC has obtained an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) License from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), paving way for the commencement of exploration drilling, with the development of the first 20 wells presently underway.
GDC is currently undertaking geothermal exploration and appraisal drilling at the Paka and Korosi Prospects in the Baringo-Silali Geothermal Project. So far, eleven (11) exploration and appraisal wells in Paka field have been drilled successfully, and drilling of the twelfth (12) and thirteen (13) wells is underway. Three (3) exploration wells have been drilled successfully in Korosi prospect. Four (4) wells have been successfully tested following the completion of the heating monitoring period of the well, while the rest of the wells are heating up.
