Analysis of Equipment Performance of a Drilling Rig in Menengai Geothermal Field

The process of drilling contains many challenges which may include the failure of equipment and this leads to non-productive time (NPT) which is costly to the company. In this paper, the analysis of Ndovu 3’s performance during the period of March 2017 to January 2018 was carried out. This involved the collection of equipment breakdown data for the duration which the rig was drilling MW-12A and MW-27 in Menengai as well as the studying and tabulation of breakdowns of the various drilling rig equipment subsystems. By use of statistical methods, the equipment subsystems causing the most downtime were identified and the root causes of their failure noted down and this enabled the proposition of practical approaches so as to reduce this downtime and effectively increase equipment availability.
