A delegation from the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) on Saturday, July 18, 2026, concluded a two-day benchmarking tour of GDC’s Menengai and Suswa geothermal projects, taking home practical lessons from Kenya’s geothermal development model to support Zimbabwe’s emerging geothermal programme.

The visit exposed the delegation to the full geothermal value chain, from resource exploration and drilling to steam field management, power generation, and direct-use applications, offering a first-hand appreciation of Kenya’s geothermal success.
“What we have seen here is something worthwhile for us to develop in Zimbabwe. I thank GDC for allowing us to witness it firsthand,” said ZESA Executive Director Eng. Itayi Utah, describing the tour as a valuable learning experience for Zimbabwe’s geothermal ambitions.

At the Menengai Geothermal Project, the delegation toured a discharging geothermal well, the GDC Control Room, the Sosian Geothermal Power Plant, the Direct Use Pilot Site, and the drilling simulator. GDC technical experts also shared practical experiences on geothermal resource assessment, drilling operations, and steam field management.
The team later visited the Suswa Geothermal Project, where they observed preparations for exploratory drilling and gained insight into the planning and technical processes involved in developing a greenfield geothermal resource—knowledge directly applicable to Zimbabwe as it advances its own geothermal development programme.
