GDC backs Menengai youth teams with sports kits donation

The Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has stepped up its community engagement efforts, equipping seven youth teams in Mercy Njeri, Rongai Sub-County, with sports kits to nurture talent s.

The distribution, held on April 16, 2026, made possible through GDC’s collaboration with the Kenya Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund (SASDF), follows a request from the local community, with each team receiving sets of jerseys and footballs to support their participation in the local sports league.

Speaking during the handover, Community Relations Manager Mr. Salad Tutana said the initiative is part of GDC’s broader approach to ensuring that geothermal development goes hand in hand with community well-being.

“As we advance geothermal exploration and development around Menengai, we are equally committed to ensuring that the communities hosting these projects benefit socially and economically. Supporting youth through sports is one way of linking our core mandate with sustainable community development, while keeping young people engaged and focused,” he said.

He added that investing in youth initiatives helps build long-term relationships between GDC and host communities while complementing national development goals.

Mercy Njeri Community Secretary Mr. Eliud Mugo said the kits would motivate players, while Chairperson Ms. Judy Chepkuri said the gesture had energized the teams.

Beneficiary teams included Ol Rongai FC, Kichwa FC, Mercy Njeri FC (men and ladies), Mache FC, Simba FC, and Kamungei FC.
