GDC experts from different professions participated in a mentorship forum organized by the University of Nairobi Engineering Students Association on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, at the institution’s Charter Hall in Nairobi County.
Prof. Gitau Ayub Njoroge Dean Faculty of Engineering in his opening remarks appreciated GDC for its effort in taking up engineering students through a mentorship programme by raising the profile of the engineering profession. He also mentioned that they are committed to fostering relationships with the organization which is committed to investing the future in engineering.
The purpose of the programme was to foster continued students’ interest in the engineering career, expose them to the various engineering careers available to them after graduation as well as empower them to be part and parcel of the greater engineering community.
The following gave their views on the mentorship. Speaking at the forum, the students expressed their excitement at the opportunity to interact with and learn from seasoned practitioners. “It was inspiring to learn about the different roles that engineers can play in the energy sector from exploring possible geothermal wells to developing power plants and as the world transitions to cleaner energy sources, there will be a growing demand for engineers with expertise in sustainable energy technologies”, said Reagan Ndubi who is studying Electrical Engineering.
Samuel Ochor, also undertaking Electrical Engineering studies said the mentorship forum was an incredible eye- opener and it highlighted the importance of sustainable energy and how geothermal energy can play a vital role in our energy mix.
GDC experts shared with the students their experiences and how they have managed to achieve success in the various engineering fields. “Passion for innovation and interest in physics were my primary motivations for pursuing Engineering,” GDC Senior Drilling Engineer Emmanuel Mwanthi. “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up, the most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time. Networking and internships are the best ways in which a student can get real-life experiences,” he added.
GDC experts have been actively involved in student mentorship through career fairs; availing a platform to inform students on geothermal-related courses and advise them on what it takes to successfully make it in different career fields.
