|GDC gets shs. 1.6 Billion grant|
Japan has granted the Geothermal Development Company Kshs. 1.6 billion for capacity building. The grant deal was penned in Nairobi by Mr. Davies Chirchir, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum and Mr. Hidetoshi Irigaki, Director General, Japan’s Industrial Development and Public Policy Department, in the presence of GDC’s Managing Director, Dr. Silas Simiyu.
“To achieve on its mandate of delivering 5, 000 MW by 2030, GDC requires continuous capacity building of equipment and human resources,” noted Mr. Chirchir.
This is a big boon for the company that the country is looking up to to provide energy solutions. The grant will support the development of geothermal projects in Menengai I and II, Suswa and other geothermal fields.
The training will last for three years. It is an on-the-job module where experts from Japan will train the Kenyan crew on the site.
The grant will support training in diverse geothermal areas including engineering, exploration, negotiations and direct utilsation of geothermal resources.
Dr. Simiyu noted that improved training increases efficiency and thereby accelerate geothermal production in the country. He thanked Japan for this “generous and timely gesture.”
Also present at the function were John Omenge the Government Chief Geologist, and Mr. Hideo Eguchi, Chief Representative JICA Kenya Office.
