Ministry of Energy (MoE) - mandated by both the Policy and the Law for the stewardship of the sector through energy policy development and review. The Ministry makes and articulates energy policies to create an enabling environment for efficient operation and growth of the sector, prepares a least cost development program for the power sector and facilitates mobilisation of resources for the energy sector. Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) - KenGen generates electricity from various sources which include hydro, wind, thermal and geothermal. Currently KenGen is generating about 150MW of electricity from geothermal sources. Visit Website

The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) - responsible for the distribution of electricity in Kenya. KPLC is also involved in transmission systems comprising 220kV, 132kV and 66kV transmission lines. Visit Website

Kenya Transmission Company (KETRACO) - This Company was registered in November 2008. The new company is wholly owned by the Government and its core functions are to plan, design, construct, own, operate and maintain high-voltage electricity transmission lines, and fibre optic cables.

Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) - responsible for the regulation of the energy sector. The ERC was established as a single sector regulator for the energy sector. An Energy Tribunal was also set up to arbitrate disputes in the sector. Visit Website

Rural Electrification Authority (REA)
- Rural Electrification Authority which came into operation in July 2007 implements the Rural Electrification Programme. Visit Website

Independent Power Producers (IPPs) -These inlcude IberAfrica, Tsavo, Mumias Sugar Company and the OrPower who contribute approximately 30% of electricity to the national grid as follows:


a) Iberafrica (56 MW Thermal power plant),
b) OrPower (48 MW Geothermal power plant),
c) Tsavo (74 MW Thermal power plant).
d) Mumias Sugar Company (26MW, Co-Generation)

Emergency Power Producers (EPPs) - Currently the only EPP, Aggreko has a short term supply of electricity commissioned during the prolonged drought.
