The African Development Bank (AfDB) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Menengai Geothermal Project.
Speaking yesterday during a tour of the project, the AfDB Vice President and Special Envoy on Gender Ms. Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi exclaimed, “What I have seen here in Menengai is quite remarkable! The biggest achievement is that this is a Kenyan-run facility. Menengai should now be a Global Center of Excellence.”
Madam Envoy was quite impressed by the gender equality at GDC. “As an African, I look at Menengai with great pride. We need to celebrate it,” she added.
Ms. Moleketi stated that AfDB will walk together with GDC in order to achieve the grand vision. The Special Envoy also revealed that the AfDB Board of Directors, while at a recent meeting on African Development held in Lusaka, Zambia, discussed in details the success of Menengai Geothermal Project.
The envoy was flanked by the AfDB coordinator at the National Treasury Ms. Fresia Kamau, the AfDB Country Programme Officer Mr. Samuel Kamara, among other delegates. Speaking on behalf of the National Treasury, Ms. Kamau noted that the Menengai Geothermal Project is a good case study and said that the government appreciates the work GDC has done so far.
“As National Treasury, we are looking at the Ministry of Energy to avail 5,000MW to enhance trade and commerce in order to create employment. GDC plays a key role in the achievement of this target,” she indicated.
The AfDB entourage also visited the Wanyororo community water tank and met with two community members – Mr. Michael Mwangi and Ms. Lucy Wanjiru - who happily narrated how GDC’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme has benefitted them in accessing clean water.
